Hi, my name's Sally Mayfield and I'm looking forward to connecting with you to talk about therapy. Therapy's a journey I travelled myself and it got me to where I am today, working as a psychotherapist with people having a tough time. From personal experience, having walked the therapy journey, I can tell you there'll always be somewhere else to think about exploring but, if you don't start walking, you're likely to stay pretty much where you are!
To give you an idea of what I've done with my life so far, I had a career as a nurse and in service development roles in the NHS. I gradually transitioned from healthcare to teaching in higher education where I worked with adult students returning to education. Finally, I trained as a therapist - my best job yet!
I work with people trying to understand how their present life is impacted by previous experience. It may be uncomfortable to think about but many adults I work with have a history of difficult childhood experiences. I've also worked with a lot of people impacted by difficult relationships in their personal or work life. Today, you may feel limited by certain ingrained habits, behaviours or response patterns and wonder - why do I keep doing this? Often, these patterns are established because we had to find ways to protect ourselves and keep ourselves safe when our options were limited. I've found that, once we understand why we started doing something, we can reassess whether it still works for us. We're then in a much better position to start doing something different, if that's what we decide we want to do.
Whether you identify with what I've just said or not, I want to help you live your best life. This means relating effectively with others, whilst not neglecting your own needs. It means having the boundaries in place so you routinely sustain yourself and don't have to run continually on empty. Do you believe you deserve care, consideration and respect? Because I do.
Both you and I are unique individuals so we'll work together in a unique and individual way during therapy. That's fine, by the way. Therapy isn't about being given answers by a clever therapist. It's about uncovering and practising new ways of meeting obstacles drawing on the hidden, deep resources in you our work together will help you find.
My training to be a psychotherapist at York St. John University was humanistic and integrative. This means I now bring strategies and ideas from a variety of therapeutic approaches into my work with clients. You, as an individual and your unique personal story will always be the focus of our work. I will listen carefully to the narrative you bring, treat it with the utmost respect and help you gain insight.
I wish you the best in your journey through life. If you think you'd like to have a team mate alongside you in that journey for a while, supporting you as you make some changes, please do get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you.
